If Harrow on the Hill has been my long, winding love letter to restoration, then The Nook is its charming countryside companion, a tiny 1500s cottage tucked into the heart of Hursley, Winchester, full of history, quirks, and the kind of character you simply can’t manufacture.

Sixteen weeks. That’s how long it took for our 40ft container, packed with our furniture, books, art, memories, and the everyday things that make a house feel like home, to finally arrive in London.

December arrived quietly. No snow, no grand reveal, just a shift in light, a softness in the air, and the quiet hum of anticipation.

After sixteen weeks of living minimally, our container finally arrived, and with it, the boxes marked ‘Fall’ & ‘Halloween’. Tucked inside were garlands, candle holders, and little treasures that have followed us through years of celebrations.

After the dust settles from Phase 1, floors restored, walls replastered, paint drying in soft, intentional tones, you’d think we’d be ready to settle in. But our furniture? Still sailing across the Atlantic in a 40ft container. So here we are, camping in our own home.

Lighting has always been more than just functional, it’s emotional, architectural, and deeply personal. As we moved through phase one of our home renovation, updating the lighting became a key part of restoring character and creating atmosphere.

One of the earliest decisions we made in renovating our Victorian Gothic Revival home was to replace the modern Type 21 radiators wherever possible with traditional column-style radiators. It wasn’t just about heating,it was about restoring a sense of architectural integrity and visual harmony throughout the house.

Some transformations don’t require demolition, just intention. Our fireplace was one of those moments. It had good bones, a solid wood surround, beautiful proportions, and a tiled hearth that had clearly seen decades of use. But it felt heavy, dated, and out of character with the rest of the room’s evolving mood. So we didn’t rip it out. We revived it.

In a house with high ceilings, original mouldings, and centuries-old character, the walls aren’t just surfaces, they’re storytellers. But even the most beautiful canvases need framing. As we’ve moved through this first phase of our renovation, we’ve looked for ways to add depth, texture, and meaning to our walls without overwhelming their quiet dignity.
